The current study tested the reading outcomes of preschool children as they used the read-aloud feature of digital storybooks in one of three conditions: (1) multimedia animations focused on storyline elements, (2) multimedia animations focused on illustration details or (3) no additional multimedia animations. Three research questions were addressed: 1. Are there differences in young children's comprehension after using digital storybooks with animations focused on storyline elements, animations focused on illustration details or no additional animations? 2. Do young children report differences in story enjoyment after using digital storybooks with animations focused on storyline elements, animations focused on illustration details or no additional animations? 3. Does the impact of multimedia animations in digital storybooks vary across children? Do children with varying vocabulary skills benefit differently from animations focused on storyline elements or illustration details when using digital storybooks? (author abstract)
