The Preschool Early Literacy Indicators (PELI) is an assessment tool developed to be used both for screening and progress monitoring. It is unique in that it has been designed to incorporate psychometrically sound assessment practices within a child-friendly storybook format. Comprised of 10 different storybooks or alternate forms, the PELI embeds activities assessing phonological awareness, alphabet knowledge (AK), vocabulary and oral language (V-OL), and comprehension into each book. A series of studies have provided initial reliability and validity data for the PELI (Bravo Aguayo & Kaminski, 2012; Bravo Aguayo, 2010; Kaminski, Abbott, Bravo Aguayo, & Latimer, 2013) as well as initial data on preliminary benchmark goals with a small sample of children from one site (Kaminski, Abbott, Bravo Aguayo, Good, & Latimer, 2012).
