Using Turn and Talk to develop language: Observations in early classrooms

Description:

Turn and Talk (T&T) is a widespread approach to inviting children to talk with their peers and develop language. Language development plays a critical role in learning to read, and ultimately in success in school (Dickinson et al., 2010; Massonnie et al., 2019; Suggate et al., 2018). However, to develop language, children need to engage in meaningful, back-and-forth conversations (Wasik & Hindman, 2020). These conversations can be challenging when teachers have 25–30 children in a classroom and have limited time to converse with each child every day. Many teachers use T&T to foster children’s conversation with peers, but not much has been written for teachers about how to use it effectively to optimize children’s language development. This paper will share authentic observations of T&T in preschool through first-grade classrooms, describing specific ways that teachers aligned their T&T practices with the research on supporting early language development.
