Effects of a competency-based professional development training on children's physical activity and staff physical activity promotion in summer day camps

Description:
In the spring of 2011, the YMCA of Columbia, SC, with the support of the University of South Carolina, adopted the competency-based training approach in an attempt to align staff behaviors with the YMCA of the USA PA Standards for SDCs. At the midpoint of the partnership, we found promising outcomes in terms of both changing staff behaviors and increasing child activity levels. The purpose of this chapter is to describe a three-year partnership between the university and local YMCAs, whose purpose was to provide competency-based professional development training, and to outline the effect of the training on children's activity levels in participating SDCs over two years.
