Early childhood intervention: A promising preventative for juvenile delinquency

Description:
In this article, we will review some of the known and suspected causes of juvenile delinquency and examine how they are addressed by general types of delinquency programs. The literature on pre- and posttreatment efforts is expansive and will not be detailed here. (See Henggeler, 1989, for a review of these methods.) To this literature we will add descriptions and results of early childhood intervention programs that have not typically been included in discussions of delinquency reduction and prevention. The rationales of these approaches may be productively synthesized as we work toward a more effective means of preventing problem and criminal behavior among juveniles. (author abstract)
