Using state administrative data from child care licensing and subsidy, we present five approaches to mapping Alabama’s regulated center-based and home-based child care access with a focus on children receiving child care subsidies. We offer maps for each of the five approaches by Child Management Agency (CMA) region, including separate maps for four cities: Birmingham, Mobile, Huntsville, and Montgomery. Additionally, we provide data stories for the four cities to demonstrate how the different mapping approaches can be interpreted together to understand child care access and supply needs better. This report accompanies interactive maps presented to the Alabama Department of Human Resources. Results can be used to make data-informed decisions to meet access needs and increase the supply of high-quality child care options, especially for families using child care subsidies. We end with recommendations for further examining and improving child care access, including ideas for future research and maximizing administrative data. (author abstract)
