This brief presents qualitative findings from focus groups with 39 parents in the District of Columbia who use licensed child care for their child younger than age 6. We recruited parents across DC’s eight wards who had participated in a previous telephone survey about their child care search experiences (Sandstrom, Kuhns, Casas, Lauderback, Bose, et al. 2022; Sandstrom, Kuhns, Casas, Lauderback, Hernandez-Lepe, et al. 2022). The survey and focus groups are part of the DC Child Care Policy Research Partnership project, which focuses on the supply of quality child care and investments in quality improvement initiatives in the District from the perspectives of providers, educators, and parents. We conducted one-hour, virtual focus groups in English and Spanish. During these focus groups, we asked parents about their experiences with their current child care providers, their reflections on recent child care staff turnover, and the District’s efforts to achieve pay equity for the early childhood educator workforce. This brief summarizes key findings on these topics, while a companion brief (Lauderback et al. 2023) describes parents’ experiences searching for and selecting a child care provider. (author abstract)
