Examining the current knowledge about and its implications for prekindergarten, this document includes an introduction, an overview of public prekindergarten in the United States, and an overview of the existing knowledge on public prekindergarten results with a consensus statement summarizing the major findings and conclusions. Topical chapters look at differences in benefits for children, different types of curricula and school readiness, program characteristics and children's outcomes, universal versus targeted programs, the costs and benefits of scaled-up programs, challenges to scaling up programs, policy and governance challenges faced by programs, financing programs, and reframing early care and education.
