Description:
In this article, we briefly describe collaboration between early childhood education programs and refugee resettlement and other immigrant-serving organizations as an effective strengths-based strategy for improving culturally responsive systems and services. Using the example of an Early Head Start/Head Start (EHS/HS) and refugee resettlement partnership project, we share successful strategies developed at two sites: Phoenix, Arizona, and Syracuse, New York. This Office of Head Start (OHS)-funded project resulted in online technical assistance resources that can support other early childhood education programs in their efforts to implement culturally and linguistically responsive services. The experiences of these two quite different cities can provide both a road map and an inspiration to communities large and small across this country as they rally to support the increasing numbers of refugees arriving today.
