Description:
This study examines child care market rates in New Mexico in 2013. Surveys were administered to 929 licensed center-based and family child care providers and non-relative registered home providers. Market rates are calculated by provider type, child age, provider urbanicity, and STAR rating. Median rates range from $325 per month for registered rural family child care for a preschooler to $716 per month for full-time 5-STAR center-based care for an infant in a metropolitan area. Rates have increased for 2-STAR rural family homes by more than 35 percent since 2011. On average, providers are open for almost 12 hours a day, with providers more likely to be open before 7 am (41 percent) than after 7 pm (9 percent). Providers also identified factors that influence their rate-setting, with operating costs, rates in the community, and parents' willingness to pay the three most common factors.
