Process evaluation and challenges in collecting data from an after-school sports and literacy program in a diverse, low-income community

The REACH (Reflective Educational Approach to Character and Health) program is a 32-week after-school program designed for and implemented in a low-income school over an academic school year with the goal of reducing disparities in PA between high SES and low SES youth. The REACH program aims to provide youth a safe place to play, gain access to physical activity to increase fitness, and provide further support for literacy development. Thus, as we explain later, we measured physical activity, fitness, and literacy outcomes. The purpose of this study was to conduct a process evaluation examining the “mechanism of impact” by evaluating responses to the intervention on key variables as well as situate the implementation and outcomes in the context of this specific population by identifying areas of success and challenges. While the focus is on program evaluation, we hypothesized that the students in the intervention schools would engage in the program with high fidelity and participate in the evaluation of the program on all the variables measured.
