Not golden yet: Building a stronger workforce for young children in California

Description:
This paper looks at how, and whether, the state of California is preparing its early childhood educators for the demands of a growing, more diverse population. The focus in these pages is on professionals and those who aspire to the profession of early education. (Children are, of course, also cared for by other able adults, including family members, friends, neighbors, or otherwise unlicensed child care providers; they are beyond the purview of this report.) What is California doing to build a workforce that can adequately care for and educate its youngest citizens? What lessons can other states draw from California's experience? (author abstract)
