How do we assess the status of children’s environmental health and any progress being made? An environmental public health indicator provides information about a population’s health status with respect to environmental factors which can then be used to assess a factor associated with health to help target action where it is most needed, allocate resources, etc. Children's Environmental Health Network, with support from the Passport Foundation, offers this report on children’s environmental health indicators (CEHIs). The report reviews and discusses existing indicator efforts, including the agencies that are leading these efforts, indicators relevant to children’s environmental health, the contributions and challenges associated with each effort, potential gaps, and the purpose and intended use. The purpose of the report is to provide 1) an understanding of the relationship between environmental conditions and health outcomes and 2) an assessment of the development, use, and maintenance of indicators to track and measure the effectiveness of protections and policies intended to improve these conditions. Organizations, community groups and individuals are encouraged to review this report to help provide a better understanding of the use and importance of indicators, the types of indicators relevant to children’s environmental health, and the challenges and gaps that exist.
