The impact of proposed budget cuts to Head Start

Description:

The $750 million in proposed cuts to Head Start and Early Head Start included in the House Labor/HHS/Education Appropriations Subcommittee FY24 bill would have a devastating impact – when combined with the impact of inflation, roughly 80,000 fewer children and their families would lose access to the life changing services of Head Start. In addition, workforce shortages would be exacerbated due to continued under-compensation, and the additional services that make Head Start and Early Head Start a powerful intervention for children from the most at-risk backgrounds would have to be curtailed. The National Head Start Association reached out to programs across the country to ask what the impact of a 10% budget cut would have on their programs. The following are some of their replies.
