Cross-grade collaboration: When students of different ages work together, social and emotional learning is enhanced

Description:

The author of this article implemented a mixed age curriculum in her classroom to involve fourth graders and preschoolers reading the classic “Three Little Pigs” story. During the activities, the students were challenged to design the best structure that would withstand the simulated weather in the “Three Little Pigs Design Challenge”. The study described how the mixed-age group of students worked together and communicated to construct the best structurally sound building with the provided materials.
